At
the beginning of 1977, the club was casting about for a major
ongoing project. Stan Clark was then on the Community Service
Project committee and invited Sister Kathleen, the Administrator
of St.Vincents Hospital to address the club on a domiciliary nursing
service which the staff were conducting on an ad hoc basis. Sister
Kathleen as guest speaker, convinced the club of the very real
need to provide an after-care service for the patients in their
homes after they left hospital. Stan later presented a fully documented
case for consideration by a club assembly which decided to proceed
with the project. Action was taken very quickly and the first
car was purchased from David Lewis Motors through David Lewis,
a member of the club. It was a Renault Station Wagon and cost
the club about $6000.00 which was cost price. David Lewis also
agreed to provide free servicing for the first two years and he
continued this for further periods on subsequent replacement cars.
The first car was presented to Sister Kathleen by President Bob
Frost on 29th July 1977. The project was granted second prize
in a Jaycees Significant Achievement Award and Bob Frost travelled
to Hobart to receive the certificate
