Muriel
Sluce, a local artist who was trained at the Launceston
School of Art, also taught art in Secondary School
for 17 years and has a Diploma of Fine Art, had
been the driving force behind this long running
event.
The
original concept was to conduct an art exhibition
each year to raise funds to assist with building
of the Max Fry Memorial Hall in Trevallyn, a suburb
of Launceston. Muriel and her committee wished to
honour the late The Honourable W.H.M. (Max) Fry,
M.L.C., Member for Launceston in the Legislative
Council from the 10th May 1958 until 18th December
1965, Mayor of Launceston (1962-63) On Its completion
The HON. ERIC REECE MHA, opened the Max Fry Memorial
Hall on the 23 August 1968, since then there has
been 29 highly successful exhibitions.
Since
1997.... Following an approach from Muriel and
her committee, and through the efforts of a Past
President of our Rotary Club, it was decided to
take on the responsibility to continue this important
community Art event. “It is a well-known event
on the Launceston and State Arts calendar and always
attracts significant public interest and attendance.”
This is to inform the art community that our Committee has had to regretfully cancel the Rotary Art Exhibition for this year.
The cancellation of the exhibition is due to circumstances entirely beyond our control and we felt that we must inform you at the earliest possible moment. We would take this opportunity to thank you for your support and indeed given the enthusiastic support we have had in the past, we may be able to conduct Rotary Art again in the future. Again, our apologies for the cancellation and we thank you for your understanding.
